I taught middle sch...I can so relate to this post! I taught middle school for 15 years, and I only called roll out loud on the opening day that first year. It was such an awful experience that I vowed to never do that again. After that, on the first day, I had the students do an opening activity while I went from desk to desk and asked each student to pronounce their name. It saved both of us much embarassment! I wasn't there when the poor child was born, so how was I supposed to know who they were named after and what it was supposed to sound like?
