Psalm Sunday #12

Psalm 12

1Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.
2They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.
3The LORD shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:
4Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?
5For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.
6The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
7Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.
8The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

What I love about David is that he knew where to turn for help. This Psalm begins by David asking the Lord for help. Help Lord because godly men and faitful men are hard to find. David then talks about those around him who speak vanity and with flattering lips and a double heart and then goes on to say what will happen to those that act that way.

This passage reminds me of those those who say whatever is on their mind without giving any thought as to how it may affect others. God says that the person who does that is foolish.

I think of times that I have said things without regard for feelings of the person who is being addressed or spoken of. Probably because of being attacked or the like, but does that justify being able to speak whatever I want. I would say not since God says that vengeance is His.

I love the end of this Psalm where is says, the words of the Lord are pure words...purified seven times. In order to have pure words, we must have a pure heart, for out of the abudance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight oh Lord my Strength and my Redeemer.

  1. Amen.

My tongue is often my downfall -- it ends up in my mouth as often as not. Thank God for the Holy Spirit, who whispers in my ear and reminds me to cool it.

  2. There is a saying that says that is why God gaves us 2 ears and 1 mouth. So we can listen twice as much as we talk. Unfortunately, sometimes I am the fool and I speak too quickly without thinking. :o(

    Thanks for sharing this.

  3. Thank you for pointing out that the Psalm began with Help, Lord. As obvious as that is, I think I read it and didn't give it a thought. But how important it is, that it started that way. Help, Lord...I come to you first.
