What's in a Name??

So as my profile states, I am a tutor for an On-line Education Company. For the past several weeks I have spent time calling, registering students, so of course I come across lots of new names. For security purposes, I won't list the full names here, but I just had to share the names that I have encountered.

I called the first house and asked to speak with the parents of Typreshion (I pronounced it Ty-pre-shon) only to be corrected and told that his name is Ty-pre-SHE-on!

OK, so I understand that this is America and we have the right to name our children whatever we want to name them, but to cop an attitude when I get it wrong! You have got to be kidding.

So I go on down the list only to discover that we women must really love our men. How do I know that?? With names like Stevondra, Anthonisha, Darshaneil, and Lloydricia it's hard to deny it ladies!!!

And just so you know, I am NOT making these names up.

So Ladies, as I stated before, it is certainly your prerogative to name your child whatever you choose, but please have a little patience with those who may just get it wrong the first time.

  1. I can so relate to this post! I taught middle school for 15 years, and I only called roll out loud on the opening day that first year. It was such an awful experience that I vowed to never do that again. After that, on the first day, I had the students do an opening activity while I went from desk to desk and asked each student to pronounce their name. It saved both of us much embarassment! I wasn't there when the poor child was born, so how was I supposed to know who they were named after and what it was supposed to sound like? I'll never forget the year I had 3 Ariel/Ariell/Arriels all written and pronounced differently!
