Going Natural

I'm thinking of growing out my perm. I am tired of getting my hair relaxed every 6 weeks. I don't really want to chop it all off yet, so I have been looking up information on how to transition. Some suggest getting braids. I don't really want braids either. Plus I still have to figure out what to do with my natural hair when I take them out.

Are there any of you out there that have "gone natural". Did you have to do the big chop or did you maintain two textures and trim until all the perm was gone?

I am hoping that one day in the not so distant future I will be able to say with confidence, "I am happy to be nappy!" :-)

  1. Well, I was at one time a platinum blonde and it was a PAIN to grow it out. Uggggh. I ended up cutting it really short. Since then, I have NEVER colored it again and leave it natural! (Don't want to go through the growing out thing again.)

You're face shape is really good -- I think you could totally pull off a super short crop!

  3. I forgot to say that I just did the "big chop" about 3 weeks ago and love it. No more perm!

  4. Yolanda,

I had been thinking of going natural for a long time. I was before about 7 or 8 years ago. I permed then because I was in a small town and no one including me knew anything about caring for natural hair.
This time I have lots of options, so I got out the clippers and shaved off my chin length bob. Extreme, I know! You know what, I love it! I feel so free. I've just keeping been keeping it oiled and brushed. My hair has grown alot just in this short time. If you choose to grow it out some first, I would try a straw set for a while. Many sisters do braids, but I think they do so much damage to your hairline, it's not worth it. Hope that helps, be brave!

  5. I have enjoyed reading your blog. I began to transition to natural in Dec '05. I was fully natural about 18 months later. My intentions were to transition and keep my hair looking neat while it was growing out, but I was pregnant, sick. So most days I pulled my hair back in a bun. That did alot of breakage to my relaxed hair, so I never really chopped off anything. longhaircareforums.com helped me out alot. Happy Hair Growing.
